You CAN tell a book by its cover
Nothing is more important than the first impression, and in the world of book publishing, that means the cover. Nan McLaughlin Beams, Production Manager for Poisoned Pen Press, will moderate a panel of three Phoenix designers who have produced award-winning cover designs for PPP. The panel will discuss how they approach their assignments and what you need to know about photography, typography, color and design to get your books the attention they deserve. Bring a cover of your own for a chance at a helpful critique from the panel.
Our three designers are Marsha Minniss, Patrick Hoi Yan Cheung, Geoffrey Boyarsky.
Panel moderator Nan Beams designed and has edited The Poisoned Pen bookstore’s monthly newsletter, The Booknews, since the store opened nearly 20 years ago, and for the last three years has also been juggling her time as chief of production at Poisoned Pen Press. A Journalism and English graduate of Indiana University, her varied career has included advertising copywriting, marketing, college
textbook editing and promotion, academic newsletter editing and production as
well as public relations, most recently for Arizona State University’s Polytechnic campus, and the ASU business school.
Marsha Minniss has designed everything from rattlesnake belts to giant signage, to web sites. Book covers are especially fun to design, as the possibilities are enormous. Who doesn’t love making images? The game is creating an image that represents the story and attracts the reader!
Hoi Yan Patrick Cheung was greatly interested in art and started learning different painting skills from his parents at the age of five. In his eyes, Art and Design are equally important to visual expression and they are the abstract form of a timeless language. He has completed both his undergraduate and master degrees in graphic design at Arizona State University. Patrick has worked at Fender Musical Instruments for six years as their senior graphic designer and teaches various design courses part-time at ASU. He is currently a Ph.D candidate in visual communication design.
Geoffrey Boyarsky is responsible for graphic design and administration of a wide variety of printed and electronic communication produced by ASU Public Affairs on the West campus. He has also taught Graphic Design as adjunct faculty at Glendale Community College, The Art Institute of Phoenix and the ASU College of Human Services, Communications Department. He joined ASU in 1994 after more than two decades as a graphic designer, marketing consultant and print broker, primarily in the Northern California Bay Area.
