“What’s Up/Down with the Publishing Industry?”

Joan Foltz, Alsek Research

The book publishing industry seems to be in a state we haven’t seen before—ever. Traditional business models are being threatened, yet new opportunities for innovation become increasingly available as the very nature of “the book” evolves in the minds and the hands of booksellers and readers alike. And the overarching power of the Internet is unleashing tremendous forces that affect every publisher—from the largest worldwide company right down to the one-book self-publishing author.

Futurist Joan Foltz of Alsek Research will construct a vision of the future business world of publishing with insights as to how a publisher will likely operate. Hear what this futurist sees on the horizon, what forces are shaping things to come, and the changing role of the publisher.

  • Take a systematic look at the emerging issues in the publishing industry.
  • Recognize the difference in shifts, cycles, and evolutionary changes.
  • Identify the differences between users of books, music, and movies.
