“Pitching the Producer: How to Make Television Work for You”

It used to be about press kits, press releases, a nice book & the “Oh So Perfect“ press photo. In 2009 it is all about the pitch, topicality and sizzle! We have become a dramatic, multi-tasking, I-want-it-now society. The big question facing publishers and authors is how to get the attention of television producers and score that all important four minutes of fame? As important as the internet has become, the commonality of Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, the television interview is still key to book sales and success. Likeability and personality sell books. Join working producer Laura Holka for insider tips, tricks and coaching advice! She’ll cover

  • Hiring PR — Why you should and if not how to do your own.
  • Research — Why it’s important and how to do it.
  • Pitching — Key to all interviews. What works for you & your book.
  • Soundbites — Writing and speaking them. Why they are HUGE!
  • Media Coaching — The “Make it or Break it” of media!!!
  • Actual Interview — How to have the most successful 4 minutes.

lauraholka.jpgMedia veteran, Laura Holka has more than 25 years experience in the valley as a producer, strategist & coach. Much of that time was spent with Newschannel 3 in news, production and as a member of the Good Morning Arizona team. She has also worked with all the major networks doing professional & collegiate basketball, football, baseball, boxing, golf, tennis & hockey. National interview or morning shows include Good Morning America, Oprah, Donahue, Nightline, 20/20 and Primetime. Laura is currently executive producer for both The Pat McMahon Show and The Chat Room on AZTV and president of her own coaching and consulting business.

Voice of Experience: Peter Burt

“Reasonable Expectations: Making POD Work for Your Author While Saving You Time and Money”

At 5:45, join us for our VOE presentation with Peter Burt who will share what he learned about working with POD services. POD is a simple cost effective way to get books into the hands of readers. Yet sometimes POD is not the correct tool. We will explore what works well, what serves the customer well, and what makes us pull our hair out and swear we will never . . .

Like McDonald’s, Lightning Source provides a POD service, with a predictable menu at a bargain price. It can do French Cuisine, but not with POD.

peters-picture-black.jpgPeter Burt started his publishing company, Soaring Images, in 2001, with iUniverse printing and distributing “A Field of Passion.” Returning to the Valley in 2007, Peter renewed his membership in the ABPA. He is currently using Lightning Source, and is happy with the product and the distribution connections. Sales, on the other hand, depend on his direct involvement with customers. Soaring Images Publishing has five books in print and five others on the way, including an historical novel that takes place in China in the 1930s. Dreams are still alive.
