President’s Message
The latest (big) news in the book industry is that Wal-Mart has begun selling bestselling, hardcover books for $10 on their website. Amazon.com decided to match this price, and now Target seems to be joining the fray. Things are getting heated, and the prices have dropped to $9. As a consumer, this sounds awesome; [...]

We have a commitment from key people to run the Arizona Book Awards this spring. I have a specific person in mind to run the annual conference, and, assuming she does, we’ll have another very-capable person in charge of an important feature of our organization. Our monthly meetings will come together nicely, but that has never been a problem. And I hope to bring in an out-of-town/big-name speaker for a meeting this year-–to attract a large audience and create momentum. I want the organization to be better organized and even stronger than it’s been in the last few years. That means finding committee chairpeople who will commit to their position for a decent amount of time.
November-December 2007 Southwest Signature
It’s been quite a year for ABPA. After months of planning, on October 6, we put on the Arizona Book Awards Banquet at which publishers from across the country were awarded Glyph Awards for publishing excellence. Less than a month later, on November 3, we held the Hot Topics Publishing conference in conjunction with PMA, a resounding success.

As publishers we are both lovers of books (one hopes) and business people. So we should especially love books about business, right? I do, and I have been reading many of them lately. Five of these books have influenced my thinking on where the publishing industry as a whole is going, and on how I can best run my publishing business.
