About the Book: Looking at the World Twice: Essays & Poems on Identity, Belonging and Otherness
The author writes from the perspective of “the other European” (from Eastern Europe) and “the other American” (an immigrant). She came to the States from Poland at a time when it was still dominated by Soviet-style Communism. In her new country she transformed herself from a scientist to a writer. These essays and poems take the reader on a journey through places and time addressing issues of identity, alienation, belonging and responsibility. Sometimes funny, sometimes tearful, but always thoughtful, this book charms and provokes. It invites the reader to sit and reflect, as symbolized by the art on the cover.

About the Author
Alicja Mann is a writer of creative nonfiction who calls herself a writer in “another language”, since English is not her native language. She moved to the States from her native Poland when it was dominated by Soviet style Communism. In her new country she transformed herself from a busy scientist (while being mother of two) to a writer. Today she is an accomplished writer, designer and publisher.
Alicja’s social and political commentaries, feature stories, profiles and interviews have been published in regional and national magazines including the Cape Cod Times, Cape Cod Life, The New Leader and In These Times. She is a former op-ed columnist for the Cape Cod Times and co-author of Son of Mashpee, a book dedicated to the Wampanoags, their heritage and culture. The book has been used in anthropology classes at the University of Massachusetts and is recommended as a resource for students and teachers from middle school through university. Son of Mashpee, in its second edition, was a finalist for an ABPA 2007 Glyph Award.
Looking at the World Twice is Alicja’s newly published collection of essays and poems addressing vital issues of identity, alienation, belonging, and responsibilities of an individual and society.
As a publisher Alicja edited, designed, and published several books by various authors in her independent publishing company–Word Studio. In 2007 the book She, Creative Journey to Self-Discovery for Woman of All Ages by Amy Rowling, published by Alicja’s Word Studio was the winner the National Indie Excellence Book Award in the Women’s Issues category.
