President’s Message from Sam Henrie
Busy, Busy, Busy
Are all publishers as busy as I am? (For the sake of their balance sheets, I hope so. For the sake of their families, I hope not.) I’m so swamped, that I’m speedwriting this month’s President’s Message. So, you’ll have to settle for a bit of stream of consciousness on a miscellany of subjects. Here goes:
The Hometown Buffet
You may be wondering why we’ve changed our permanent meeting location to the Hometown Buffet. There are several reasons, but the primary one is cost. In the last couple of years hotels and conference centers have increased the prices they charge for conference rooms and meals dramatically. The prices have gone up so much that it would be impossible for ABPA to break even hosting meetings at these venues without increasing our meeting registration fees, something ABPA’s board of directors is loath to do. Luckily, someone suggested the Hometown Buffet to us, which has both a large meeting room and reasonable prices. What a find! The Hometown Buffet has these advantages in addition to cost:
- You can choose your own menu
- You can eat as much as you like
- It’s easy to reach
- There’s plenty of parking
Thanks to the Hometown Buffet you’ll continue to get to attend presentations by such industry luminaries as Marcella Smith of Barnes & Noble (the publishing professional’s equivalent of attending a Vienna Philharmonic concert) and Dominique Raccah of Sourcebooks for a mere $25. What a deal!
ABPA’s New Cooperative Marketing Committee
I’ve been following the discussion on the ABPA Cooperative Marketing Committee Yahoo Group, and am impressed with the number and quality of suggestions for cooperative marketing efforts that committee members have made. (I’m even more impressed with the organizational skills of the committee’s chair, Tobias Lofstrand of ArTemenos Publishing, www.artemenos.com, who facilitated this discussion.) ABPA’s mission is “to advance and promote successful book publishing in Arizona through education, community involvement, cooperative effort, peer recognition, industry advocacy, and the support of 1st Amendment rights.” We created the Cooperative Marketing Committee to accomplish a part of the “cooperative effort” piece of this overall mission. If I were asked to write the mission statement for the committee it would read something like: “to design and implement programs that allow ABPA members to pool their resources in order to market their books, or other products, more effectively and inexpensively than they could by themselves.” Given such a mission, some of the new programs that committee members have suggested that appeal to me are:
- An ABPA catalog of books program
- An Arizona library mailing program using an ABPA catalog of books
- Participation in the PMA Library Mailing Program using an ABPA catalog of books
- An “in store” program with Changing Hands Bookstore, and other independents, for ABPA member-published books
- An Arizona “in store” program at Barnes & Noble and/or Borders for ABPA member-published books
- A book signing support program, in which ABPA members help each other “bring in the crowds” for their book signings
- A marketing plan training program (though I think this rightly belongs with the Programs or Educational Events Committees)
If you’re interested in participating in ABPA Cooperative Marketing Committee’s efforts, and in selling more books, consider joining the ABPA Cooperative Marketing Committee Yahoo Group at finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/ABPAmarketingcommittee.
Membership
ABPA has around 125 members. We’ve crunched the numbers and we really need to grow to around 200 members in order for us to be able to finance all of the programs and activities our mission entails. This shouldn’t be a problem given that around 4,000 ISBN prefixes have been issued to publishing companies in Arizona. Even if only 20% of these ISBN prefixes represent active publishing companies, then there are 800 book publishers in Arizona who are potential ABPA members, making 200 members a realistic goal. We just need to get in touch with these companies and sell them on the benefits of ABPA membership. Luckily, Gwen Henson, chair of the Membership & Benefits Committee, has a direct calling program under way which should increase our membership over the next few months. You, as an ABPA member, can help by inviting publishers, and other publishing industry professionals that you know, to attend ABPA meetings, and to join the organization.
Oops, got to run. 2,145 emails in my inbox to answer, 18 voicemail messages to return, and then the real work …

“How to Publish Books that Sell: Identifying and Creating a Market for Your Book”
Based upon his experience in market development and the publisher-driven model he used at Macmillan and Hungry Minds, Roland will focus on the pay off for a publisher in taking the time up front to analyze a market, determine needs and preferences, investigate the competition, and understand growth before deciding to enter the market with a new title.
He’ll explore how a publisher can research a title/ author, price point and distribution channels so that books that are published are already on the success path. The old model of author/ agent solicits publisher still works, but identifying growth areas within your market categories and then developing the book program is less risky and more likely to be effective in trade reference publishing.
Hear how this industry veteran uses his years of experience to come out of the gate with a winner!
Roland is a 27-year publishing veteran whose senior management experience ranges from content creation to sales and marketing to international rights. He began his career with Wiley and McGraw-Hill in the UK and moved to the US to join Macmillan, holding a number of positions in both the computer publishing and trade reference divisions, and working with brands such as Betty Crocker, Frommers Travel, Websters New World Dictionaries and Que computer books. Roland subsequently joined Hungry Minds, best known as the publisher of the Dummies and Cliffs Notes brands, and a market leader in both technology and trade publishing. His most recent role was as CEO of Coriolis, a major player in IT certification publishing. He is currently President at Content Connections.
Voice of Experience Lisa Liddy
At 5:45, Lisa Liddy of The Printed Page will discuss how publishers can create a new revenue stream by developing large-print books. Lisa will discuss going from a regular size book to a large-print book, what is involved, what the standards are, and the impact on design/costs for printing. In addition, she’ll touch on the marketing aspects and expected sales.
Join us for this powerful program!
Prepayment is required for registration.

ABPA announces new membership drive, with Prescott resort stay prize!
By Gwen Henson, Executive Director
We’re kicking off a new membership drive, and you play an instrumental role. As you read in president Sam Henrie’s column, ABPA continues to provide programs and services that benefit our members. Boosting our membership enables us to build stronger and better educational and marketing programs, it adds talent and knowledge to our association, and it attracts associate members that provide services that publishers need.
When new members join, they often say, “I wish I had known about ABPA sooner. I could have avoided the mistakes I made on my first book.” Or, “I could have saved myself a lot of money.” Or, “I would have earned a lot more profit on that first project.” Business executives, writers and entrepreneurs understand the value of publishing, and they need to know about ABPA in order to do it well.
ABPA is your association. You can help ABPA grow, by inviting a friend, business associate or anyone you meet who wants to publish a book to attend ABPA meetings in April, May and June. When your invited guest attends with you, we’ll have a thank you gift for you at the meeting.
Every new member that joins between April 25 and June 27 will be entered into a drawing to win a One-Night Stay for Two in a King Deluxe Room at the beautiful Prescott Resort and Conference Center. (ABPA member Sharon Tully arranged for the certificate to be donated by the Grace Hospitality Group. Thank you, Sharon!) When you attend other professional associations, invite people to our meetings and let them know that new members who join by June 27 can win a resort stay.
Help ABPA grow into an even stronger and healthier association by inviting someone you know right now!
AZ Book News: Tell Arizona Librarians about your newest books!
Submit your new titles for AZ Book News, a new service provided to librarians by the Arizona Book Publishing Association. We send the information you submit on your newest published books to librarians in Arizona.
Local authors and Arizona-related topics have special interest for local library patrons, but they can be difficult for librarians to find quickly. Now we send the information right to their desk in an easy-to-peruse format that helps them to quickly find out about these new books.
There is no charge, but you must be a member of ABPA in order for your New Title to be published in AZ Book News. To join ABPA, go to http://azbookpub.com/become-a-member/. For more information about AZ Book News, contact your executive director, Gwen Henson, at info@azbookpub.com or (602) 274-6264.
Arizona Book Festival held April 14
The Arizona Book Festival was Saturday, April 14, 2007, at Carnegie Center in Phoenix. This year, ABPA had one booth, and members volunteered to staff it in order to talk with attendees about the association and about publishing.
Sharon Tully, one of our volunteers, said “I worked the 12 – 2 shift and our booth was busy!”
Thanks to committee chair Karen Gray and these volunteers who represented ABPA: Art Consoli, Kristina Grant, Tom & Inge Myrick, and Sharon Tully.
Jessica Tribble will chair ABPA Glyph Committee
Jessica Tribble, Associate Publisher at Poisoned Pen Press, will chair ABPA’s Glyph Awards Committee.
According to Robert Rosenwald, publisher at Poisoned Pen Press, Jessica Tribble is “extraordinarily organized” and “magnificently competent,” which makes her well suited to handle this leadership position.

Changing Hands Named PW’s Bookseller of the Year
Publishers Weekly’s 15th annual Bookseller of the Year award will be awarded this year to Changing Hands Bookstore in Tempe. The bookstore, celebrating its 33rd anniversary, was nominated by Random House’s district sales manager, Ron Smith, who said, “The enthusiasm, energy and creativity of the people of Changing Hands Bookstore is what makes me look forward to each visit.”
Gayle Shanks, co-owner of the store, gives the staff credit for the award, with specific cudos to Cindy Dach and Brandon Stout. “I really feel they won the award, along with the rest of the store. The fact that the young staff is so energized by bookselling really touched my heart.”
“I’ve been in this business for the past 33 years, and I’ve worried for the past 10 whether there will be booksellers who will be following me. To find staff that is so excited about bookselling makes me feel the possibility exists for independent booksellers being around for another 100 years. I hope winning an award like this keeps everybody enthusiastic. They pour their hearts and souls into the store, the readership, and the community, that’s what makes me the happiest. They do that every single day, and I just love them for it.”
The award will be presented at this year’s BookExpo America. Be sure to congratulate Gayle, Cindy, Brandon, and the rest of the Changing Hands staff in person at 6428 S McClintock Dr (at Guadalupe).
